George William Papworth was born in Soham in 1907 (Newmarket Q3-1907 3B:471), son of William and Rosa PAPWORTH (née REEVE) of Berry Croft, Soham.

1911 census...Aged 3, he was at Berry Croft, Soham with his father William PAPWORTH [31] bricklayer; his mother Rosa [30]; sister Winifred C.[4]; brother Reginald L. [2]. All were born in Soham.

His mother died in 1921 and father then married Margaretta M HAWES in 1929.

In the 1939 register his parents were at Berry Croft, Soham, father William [22-3-1888] bricklayer/furnace man and mother Margaretta [22-1-1883]. No closed records. Father died in 1945.


His PoW card gives his date of birth as 1st August 1909 (?), occupation, bricklayer.
George was captured on Sunday 15th February in Singapore on the surrender to the Japanese. The 4th Suffolks had been holding the line between Mount Pleasant and Lornie Road. At some time he was transferred to Formosa. He had died of tropical malaria and beri beri on Formosa and buried in Rinrakutomon, Keto Gun. As with the others originally buried in Formosa, he was moved in 1947 to Saiwan Cemetery in Kong Kong He
